How to Assemble Flat-Pack Campervan Furniture with Confirmat Screws
Flat-pack furniture goes together quickly when the holes are in the right place. Here is how the process works.
What a confirmat screw is
A confirmat is a thick furniture screw with a wide thread that pulls two panels together without a nut. It needs a stepped hole. The CNC shop cuts the clearance holes. The pilot hole in the edge of the mating panel may need to be drilled by you.
Tools you need
A drill or driver, a stepped confirmat drill bit that matches your screw size, a hex bit for the screw head, a square and a few clamps. A rubber mallet helps seat tongues in their pockets.
Work in the order of the guide
Some parts cannot be added after others. A shelf with a tongue at each end, for example, cannot be slotted in once both side panels are fixed. Follow the sequence in the assembly guide and do not skip ahead.
Dry-fit first
Push the parts together without screws to see how they fit. Tongue-and-pocket joints should seat with light pressure. If a joint is tight, check for paint or varnish in the pocket before you force it.
Square the cabinet
Measure the two diagonals of the carcass. When they match, the cabinet is square. Fix the back panel while the cabinet is square, because it holds the shape.
Do not over-tighten
Plywood edges can split. Tighten until the joint closes, then stop. A cordless driver with a clutch setting prevents damage.
