How to Get Campervan Furniture CNC Cut: A Beginner’s Guide

CNC router cutting plywood furniture parts from a nested DXF layout

You do not need a workshop to build campervan furniture. You need a good set of files and a local CNC shop. This guide walks through the whole process.

What a CNC shop actually does

A CNC router follows a digital drawing and cuts panels out of a plywood sheet. It cuts the outline, the holes and the pockets in one pass. The shop returns flat panels that fit together as drawn. For you, that replaces hours of measuring, sawing and drilling.

Step 1: Find a shop

Search for CNC routing, CNC cutting or CNC wood cutting near you. Furniture workshops, makerspaces and sign makers often run routers. Ask three questions: do they cut plywood sheets of the size you need, which file formats do they accept, and can they supply the plywood or do you bring it.

Step 2: Send the DXF files and the drawings

Send the DXF files with the technical drawings. Tell the shop the exact plywood thickness. Our joints are cut for a stated thickness, so plywood that is thicker or thinner than the plan makes the joints too loose or too tight.

Step 3: Choose the plywood

Good plywood cuts cleanly and holds screws. Birch plywood is a common choice. Ask the shop to cut one small test piece first if you are unsure about the material.

Step 4: Check the parts when you collect them

Count the panels against the drawings. Check that each hole and pocket is where the drawing shows it. Lay the parts out in assembly order before you start.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not change the plywood thickness without redrawing the joints. Do not scale the files up or down, because the units and the scale are part of the design. Do not skip finishing: sand and seal the parts before assembly, while they are flat.
